Somatic Therapy

What is Somatic Therapy
Somatic therapy is an evidence-based approach to counseling that focuses on the connection between the mind and body. It is based on the understanding that stress, trauma, and difficult life experiences are not only stored in our thoughts and emotions—they can also be held within the body. Somatic therapy helps you become more aware of physical sensations, emotions, and patterns so you can release tension, regulate your nervous system, and experience lasting healing.
Unlike traditional talk therapy, somatic therapy goes beyond simply discussing your experiences. It incorporates mindfulness, body awareness, breathing techniques, movement, and grounding exercises to help you better understand how your body responds to stress and learn healthier ways of coping.
Somatic therapy was originally developed to help people heal from trauma, but research has shown it can be effective for many other concerns as well, including:
- Trauma and PTSD
- Anxiety and panic attacks
- Chronic stress and burnout
- Depression
- Grief and loss
- Emotional dysregulation
- Dissociation
- Chronic pain and tension
- Low self-esteem and negative self-beliefs
- Relationship difficulties
- Life transitions and identity exploration
At Path to Change Counseling Center, we use somatic therapy as part of a personalized treatment plan tailored to your unique experiences and goals. Our therapists help you reconnect with your body, better understand your emotions, and develop the tools needed to create meaningful, lasting change.
